The National Catholic Register Announces Partnership with Catholic News Agency

Irondale, AL (EWTN) The National Catholic Register is pleased to announce the upcoming partnership with Catholic News Agency. The Register will use Catholic News Agency as their primary source for news wire copy both in the print edition and on its website,

“CNA’s reputation for comprehensive, solidly Catholic journalism, combined with its loyalty to the Pope and the Magisterium, fits perfectly with the mission of the Register,” said Tom Wehner, Managing Editor of the National Catholic Register.

“The partnership between the Register and the Catholic News Agency is great news for our readers. I’m excited to begin this latest stage of our mission, yet another positive byproduct of our larger relationship with EWTN.”

The Catholic News Agency was founded in continued response to Pope John Paul II’s call for a “New Evangelization.” The Catholic News Agency strives to provide free, up-to-the-minute news affecting the
Universal Church, giving particular emphasis to the words of the Holy Father and happenings of the Holy See.

“CNA and the Register are a sensible fit,” said David Scott, Editor-in-Chief at Catholic News Agency. “We share a similar vision. We both believe that Catholic journalism today should reflect the highest professional values. We also believe that it must truly be ‘Catholic.’ The mission of Catholic journalism is to report and interpret the life of the world through a faithfully Catholic lens — and thereby to advance the Gospel in a culture where many people are indifferent to God, and where important interests are unfriendly to the Church and her message,” said Scott.

“We are excited to serve the Register. Together we will be able to project a dynamic Catholic worldview across a variety of platforms — from print to the web, to the various digital and social networking media.”

EWTN News, Inc. was launched as a subsidiary of EWTN Global Catholic Network to expand their operation in the global Catholic digital and multimedia market. In 2010 they started a partnership with Catholic News Agency and in February of this year, EWTN acquired the National Catholic Register.

Michael P. Warsaw, EWTN’s president and chief executive officer, and publisher of the National Catholic Register commented on the partnership, “The combined efforts of the Catholic News Agency and the National Catholic Register will help spread the good news of the Gospel to more people. I am pleased to see this partnership come to fruition. We live in an age where there is so much distortion and misrepresentation of the Church’s teaching by forces who oppose Her message, particularly in the secular news media. It is encouraging to see two faithful Catholic news sources joining forces to serve the Church and EWTN is proud to have the Register and CNA as part of our family.”

EWTN Global Catholic Network, in its 30th year, is available in over 160 million television households in more than 140 countries and territories. With its direct broadcast satellite television and radio services, AM & FM radio networks, worldwide short-wave radio station, Internet website, electronic and print news services, and publishing arm, EWTN is the largest religious media network in the world.

The National Catholic Register ( grew out of Denver’s Catholic Register, which began on Aug. 11, 1905. Under the leadership of Msgr. Matthew Smith, the Register System of Newspapers was developed, with the first national edition appearing on Nov. 8, 1927. It was acquired by the Legion of Christ in 1995.
